silicate which has been diluted with 25-30 gal of water. The mixture is
heated until the starch begins to swell at which point it is quickly
cooled and added to the beater.

Charge the kettle with caustic soda solution and start the agitator.
Heat to boiling point with direct or indirect steam and charge gradually at a uniform rate, with liquid rosin or with solid rosin which has been broken into fist-size pieces. After the rosin is charged, continue boiling for one hour. this produces about 50% solids size. Dilute the rosin size by gradually stirring the preparation into hot water. Then dilute to the desired strength with cold water. |
