Mix the naphtha and oleic acid. Add the mixed isopropanolamine and stir until clear. Dissolve the sodium nitrite in the "Tergitol," add it to the naphtha-soap solution, and stir until a clear solutionn is obtained. If the solution is not clear, add small amounts of oleic acid, stirring well between each addition, until it becomes clear.
All of these detergents are soluble inn naphtha; formula 8 contains about 35% water, but will not couple any added water into the naphtha bath. Formula 9 contains about 33% water and formula 10 contains about 15% water. Both will couple added water into naphtha but 9 will couple twice as much as 10. One volume of formula 9, 1 volume of naphtha, and 0.5 volume of water produce a clear solution that is soluble in naphtha.
The same proportions of formula 10 and naphtha will carry about 0.25 volume of water. The resulting detergents can be diluted with naphtha, if a less concentrated product is desired.
