The adhesives are made at the time of consumption, in batches that will be consumed in 4 to 8 hours. If the temperature of the adhesive is maintained at a maximum of 70F., the viscosity will remain within the desired range of workability for 24 hours or longer. Normally, however, the temperature tends to increase in the glue pan on the machine where it is being applied.
The simple mechanical dispersion of adhesives is prepared in the following manner: Add the water in a clean mixing tank. It is essential that the mixing vessel should not contain any residual silicate as this would tend to form agglomerates with the addition of the protein, and such lumps would not subsequently be dispersed. Use a high speed mixer and sift the protein in slowly so as to prevent the formation of lumps. Add starch in a like manner. Continue mixing for approximately 5 minutes or until smooth.
