Base A, a low-melting base, is useful if rapid disintegration is desired, or if the suppository is to be used in a reasonably short period of time. This base may require refrigeration during the summer monnths. Bases B and C are more stable formulations and may be used if the suppository is to be subjected to storage at higher temperatures or when a slow release of the medicament is advisable. Base b, incorporating hexanetriol-1,2,6, is especially useful for the preparation of suppositories by compression methods, and with active ingredients that have no effect on the melting point of the "Carbowax" compounds.
Base D, a higher-melting base incorporating hexanetriol-1,2,6, is recommended for preparation of suppositories by compression methods and where active ingredients slightly lower the melting point of the "Carbowax" compounds.
Base E was formulated to accommodate those medicinal substances that lower the melting point of the "Carbowax" compounds.
